Content marketing in social times

Thinking about using current affairs as a part of your content marketing strategy? These are the things to consider
Content marketing isn’t always the easiest thing in the world to do. At the start of any strategy it can be easy to think about topics that you want to use and how you are going to approach what you write and post. However, as time goes by, and you post more and more, then you will start to realise that it isn’t always as easy as you hoped to create fresh content.
One key area that you can look at to use as shareable content are current affairs, after all, what better to resonate with your target audience then what is going on in the world at this precise moment in time?
Whilst current affairs can make for great content, you should never take for granted that you will just be able to use it and not have to think too much about it. So, with this in mind we have put together the top things that you need to keep in mind when it comes to using current affairs as a part of your content marketing strategy.
Inject a spot of emotion
If there is one thing that is going to make your audience connect with you as a brand, then it is to ensure that your content hits their emotional side. You need to ensure that the content that you share is going to hit them where it is going to have the most impact. Sometimes this will be positive and sometimes it will be negative, the main aim is to have a reaction, beige content is one of the worst things that you can share.
However, be careful with what you post
Whilst we have just said that you need to share content that is going to create a reaction, you do need to be careful and thoughtful about what you post. Sharing a current news or viral story that is somewhat less than positive is going to get a reaction, but sharing something that is offensive, in bad taste or could be viewed as detrimental to your business is never a good idea. You want to make sure that your brand is at the cutting edge, and can share relevant and interesting content, however you do not want to paint yourself in a bad light and perhaps even alienate your audience.
Keep up with the times
It may seem obvious, but current affairs within content marketing works because they are current. However, this can be something that you overlook. The very nature of the subject means that it can quite quickly become stale and uninteresting to your audience, which could have the opposite effect of what you want to achieve when you share it. You need to make sure that you are sharing engaging topics and posts that your audience are liking, commenting on and interacting with, which will often mean that you need to be right on the pulse of what is going on in the world.
As you can see, current affairs can make for amazing content to share on your social media and website. However, it is key that you get this right, else you could end up seeming about as fresh as a slice of stale bread!
